from SIRS overview: "Eating disorders are long-term illnesses which are characterized by an obsession with food, diet and body-image issues and frequently occur with other mental illnesses such as depression. Some of the major eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder. These are in essence self-starvation, binging and purging, and binge-eating without purging. Symptoms of the disorders include unusual eating habits, excessive exercise, intense fear of gaining weight, eating excessively and eating alone. Recovery from eating disorders usually requires long-term treatment."
