World Refugee Crisis and the TCC Library

What is a Refugee and how many are there today ? As defined by 1951 Geneva Refugee Convention: "a person who 'owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality". IDPs, or internally displaced people have been forced from their homes but remain in their country, often seen as "enemies of the state". An estimated 10 million people are living as refugees, and for IDPs, it is estimated there are 25 million in 50 countries displaced by war or persecution, perhaps another 25 million IDPs uprooted by natural disasters such as earthquakes and famine. Almost 60 million people have been displaced from their homes, jobs and communities.
