Marijuana and the TCC Library

image of book cover "Marijuana is the most commonly used illegal substance in the United States. According to the 2003 National Survey on Drug Abuse and Health, there are an estimated 14.6 million current users. This represents about 6.2% of the total U.S. population. Marijuana produces physical, mental, emotional and behavioral changes, and contrary to popular belief, can also be addictive. The major active ingredient in marijuana is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The marijuana available in the U.S. today contains up to five times more THC than that available in the 1970s, and thus is much more potent. A recent study by the National Institutes of Health found that since 1991, while the number of marijuana users has remained about the same, the prevalence of abuse and dependence has risen 22%" SIRS Knowledge Source
