The 1916 Rising: Personalities & Perspectives
"This online exhibition from the National Library of Ireland consists of an excellent compilation of over 500 images of primary source documents related to the Easter Rising of 1916, the most famous series of events in modern Irish history.
The exhibition's perspective is broad and sets the Rising in its historical and cultural context from the interaction between England and Ireland in the 12th century through the Home Rule Movement and Fenianism and the rise of Irish cultural, especially literary, nationalism.
The Web site's focus is primarily biographical, and it provides reliable information on the signers of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic and other participants in the rebellion, as well as British politicians such as Prime Minister H. H. Asquith and Chief Secretary Augustine Birrell. The events of the Rising and its aftermath are described clearly.
Navigation through the site is simple, and the photographs and texts (including manuscripts such as letters, newspapers, and excerpts from books) are well integrated and attractively presented. A useful feature is an easily displayable reference map of key sites of the action in Dublin. There is a solid bibliography, as well as four links to three other Irish archives and the National Museum.
This Web site is a good supplement to Charles Townshend's recent magisterial study, Easter 1916: The Irish Rebellion (CH, Mar'07, 44-4073). Teachers, students, and general readers interested in modern Irish and British history will find this online exhibition the most authoritative Internet source available on the 1916 Rising."
Summing Up: Highly recommended. Academic and public libraries, all levels. -- A. H. Plunkett, Piedmont Virginia Community College."
